Overview

Edmonton jazz pianist and composer Glen Halls (a frequent attendant of
Ragamala concerts) is pleased to announce the release of his 9th CD, a solo
piano work in a contemporary jazz idiom entitled "Progression Meditation".
Deeksha records DK 101.

Of note, Glen, who has a Ph.D. in composition and has won many national and
international awards, also studied Indian music in Calcutta with Ajoy
Chakrabarty. One of the songs on the CD, a piece called "april rain", the
first piece, is loosely based on an Indian Classical model. It establishes
and maintains a drone, and the improvisation remains strictly within a
single minor mode ( though not as strict as a raga per se ). Also, he wanted
to open the album with a slowly evolving meditative work, similar to the
concept of the alap, rather than some kind of catchy jazz single. The
overall tone of the album is introspective and meditative, and really is not
idiomatically jazz, though the emphasis is on improvisation.
